1. Course Title / Name of Professor:
Seminar I (Communication Studies) / Harumichi YAMADA
(Dr. Yamada is an Associate Professor at Dept of Comm. Studies)
2. Study period: One year (April 98 - March 99)
3. Credit: 4 credits
4. Expected brief course description
The seminar read several basic Japanese academic writings on the theme of local community and communication. Outline of small-scale local communication media in Japan is discussed, and students are required to take some bibliographical survey relating the above mentioned theme.
One-week long field trip is scheduled at the end of August, which include visits to small townpapers, cable TVs, and other communication media related organizations in Nagano prefecture.
5. Textbooks: Recommended bibliography is given in the class.

Seminar is conducted in Japanese. If the exchange students feel difficulties in understanding, supplimentary explanation may be given in English. Questions in English is always welcomed in the class.

4. Expected brief course description
The seminar plan and conduct a research project under the theme of local community and communication. Choices in research topics, field location, and other concrete details of the project are decided by the discussion among the students, while field interviews and questionaire analyses are required to be parts of the project. The students should compile and publish the final report by the end of the term.

4. Expected brief course description
The lecture includes various topics under the theme of local community and communication. Following some introductory explanations on concepts and vocabulary, contemporary status of small-scale local media is discussed extensively, with cases of daily townpapers, cableTV's, local FM radios, etc. from varied parts of Japan. Through those case studies, roles of 'players' in the local community, i.e. media, local gonernments, voluntary groups, etc., are deliberately analysed.

2. Study period: Half year (September 98 - March 99)
3. Credit: 2 credits
4. Expected brief course description
Introductory training for searching and gathering various types of information, including bibliography, statistics and the like. The course includes library visit, and WWW search. Most of the class time is spent for operation of PCs. Lectures give focii on characteristics of Japanese bibliographical databases, Japanese WWW search engines, and library works to compile well organized bibliography for an academic research.
Sufficient abilities to use page browsers and e-mail systems are prerequisite.
